Antonio Conte makes interesting admission regarding Steven Bergwijn after the Tottenham Hotspur vs Leicester City clash

Speaking in his post-match presser for the Tottenham Hotspur vs Leicester City tie as quoted by Football.London, Antonio Conte admitted that Steven Bergwijn deserves more playing minutes as compared to what he is offered at the moment.

The Dutch international proved to be our unlikely hero in the reverse fixture at the King Power Stadium, but the North Londoners were much more comfortable this time around. The 24-year-old Dutch striker replaced Son Heung-Min in the 82nd minute of the game.

The South Korean put in an exceptional shift bagging two goals and an assist against the Foxes. This was a welcome sight considering that we had a few jittery moments in the first half of the game

Conte highlighted that Bergwijn deserves more time on the pitch which can be a difficult task considering the kind of form our attacking trio is showcasing at the moment.

It’s a bit difficult to keep him on the bench because maybe Steven he is the player that deserves more, but we have to keep balance. For me he is a striker, but in this position there is Harry and Sonny and Deki is giving us quality and quantity. But maybe with Steven I’m giving him less than he deserves, I’m honest in this. Lucas today gave us a good 50 minutes.

More minutes for Steven Bergwijn

The Dutch international had made a name for himself as an impact sub. The former PSV Eindhoven has just managed 836 minutes for the North London club across all competitions this campaign.

Bergwijn has mostly seemed like a fringe player at Hotspur Way under Antonio Conte. Breaking into this attacking lineup, especially when you have the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Son, and Harry Kane.

Add Lucas Moura to this mix and making inroads into the playing XI is easier said than done. At 24, Steven Bergwijn could be heading into the prime playing years and it seems unlikely that he would be content with a limited role for a prolonged period of time.

The 24-year-old has been provided a few more opportunities with the Netherlands national team bagging five goals and two assists in 18 matches across all competitions for The Flying Dutchmen.

The Lilywhites will have to face much tougher opponents in the form of Liverpool and Arsenal in their next two fixtures. It would be interesting to see whether we would have to rely on the Dutch striker should we be in a tough situation.
