Transfer News: Ajax set to rekindle interest in Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn
According to The Times (Subscription Required), Ajax are set to rekindle their interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn ahead of the summer transfer window. His future at N17 is up in the air at this moment, having struggled to get game time over the past few months or so.
Bergwijn has recently expressed that he is open to leaving Tottenham at the end of this season. That has prompted the Dutch club to take this current stance which could give the winger an option to move to the Netherlands in the future. That being said, whether he will depart or not remains to be seen.
The Eredivisie side had tried their cards to get their hands on the Dutchman in the January transfer window. They even put in an £18million bid to secure his services, but Spurs had rejected their advances as he was on the back of an impressive run of form.
Unfortunate situation
It will undoubtedly be a tough blow for us if we lose the 24-year-old this summer. After all, he possesses all the qualities required to become a top attacker at any club. However, it is unfortunate that Son Heung-Min happens to be just ahead of him in the pecking order.
Son has been in terrific form this season, and Antonio Conte cannot be blamed for using him regularly, especially when we have only the Premier League to play for at this moment. That seriously hampers Bergwijn’s chances of getting minutes, which has led to the current situation.
However, the circumstances would be different after this summer as we would be featuring in several different competitions. Hence, Bergwijn could gain more prominence, which would especially be the case if we can achieve qualification for the next term’s Champions League.
The likes of Liverpool and Manchester City have shown us why it is important to have a good depth of top quality superstars to achieve success. Having Son and Bergwijn together gives Conte a fine set of options to choose from on the left wing, which would be affected if the Dutch international departs this summer.
