Transfer News: Liverpool join race for Konrad Laimer amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest
According to the German news outlet Kicker (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have entered the race for Konrad Laimer amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur for a potential transfer. His future at RB Leipzig is surrounded by uncertainty at this moment due to the doubts regarding a new contract.
Laimer is in line to enter the final year of his current contract with Leipzig at the end of this season. That, coupled with his uncertain future, has resulted in him getting linked with an exit with several top clubs trying to finalise a potential move. Tottenham and the Reds are just two of the clubs who are pursuing him at this instant.
Spurs are also joined by Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the pursuit of signing the Austrian ahead of the summer transfer window. The English side would face a stern challenge indeed if they hope to secure the midfielder’s signature in the future.
Can Spurs sign Laimer?
The 24-year-old is one of the best central midfielders in the Bundesliga, which is the reason why he is so highly sought after right now. What’s more, the engine to constantly be at full gear while possessing the knack of getting in on the goal involvements makes him an attractive prospect for the North London side.
We could use someone like that in our ranks as we do lack someone like Laimer’s profile in our midfield options. Having scored five goals and assisted another six, he has combined his excellent work rate with decisiveness in the attacking and defensive areas.
The Bundesliga superstar could be a valuable addition indeed, considering how we just have four options in the centre of the pitch at this moment. While Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele could rejoin us this summer, it is unlikely that they are going to remain at the club since Antonio Conte had allowed them to leave in the first place.
We will need to have a good depth in our ranks even though Conte primarily depends on a two-man midfield pairing for now. Moreover, with more competitions to deal with next season and possibly the Champions League as well, bringing in Laimer could be deemed a priority.
However, with Jurgen Klopp’s side adding to the obstacles, we need to be wary of them since they are in a far better place than us right now. With two other clubs also showing an interest, it remains to be seen if we can back the Tottenham boss by bringing in a quality addition in the future.

But Spurs must understand that to rival other clubs, they may, at times, have to flex their muscles in the market in order to truly compete with the world’s best clubs. The Reds brought in Thiago Alcantara, who has completely changed the landscape of Liverpool’s midfield.
While Laimer is certainly not in the bracket of the ex-Barcelona star yet, Spurs would be wise to stack their midfield to a point where Conte has plenty of options to choose from- and a variety of players with different skill set so he can navigate each game without having to compromise in any way when it comes to team selection.
