Transfer News: Daniel Levy gives Tottenham the green light to pursue Sam Johnstone
According to the Mirror (h/t Football London), a move for West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is getting closer after Daniel Levy has given his green light for signing the England international.
The former Manchester United youth player has had somewhat of a journeyman career having been out on loan many times in his career before finally making the permanent switch to West Brom in 2018.
The 29-year-old has since then gone on to establish himself as a solid shot-stopper and has been a proven performer for the Baggies and it is no surprise that Antonio Conte is interested in bringing him to Spurs.
Having conceded just 33 goals in 36 games in the Championship this season, the English international is enjoyed a very impressive season with the struggling mid-table side and will be looking forward to returning to the Premier League.
Where does Johnstone fit in?
The 29-year-old has played over 160 games for West Brom and even won three caps for England and there is no doubting his quality.
However, Spurs already have two solid goalkeepers in Hugo Lloris and Pierluigi Gollini. Whilst the former is not getting any younger and almost always seems to have a mistake in him, Conte must be preparing Gollini to take over the number one role very soon.
This means that even if Johnstone makes the switch to White Hart Lane, he will once again get trapped in the vicious cycle of being on the bench and not being able to play enough games to prove himself.
Unless Spurs decide to sacrifice the 27-year-old who they signed from Atlanta just this season, it is very difficult to see where the Baggies shot-stopper would fit in at Tottenham. If Gollini was to be sold however, then Johnstone could come in to compete with Lloris or even succeed him eventually.

Sam Johnstone is a quality keeping roster player and will add strength in depth to the goa. Whether Spurs actually need him though is a question for Antonio Conte and Daniel Levy to answer. It remains to be seen what happens with the 29-year-old this summer.
