Transfer News: Cardiff City beat Tottenham Hotspur to sign Lewes winger Ollie Tanner

According to The Argus, Cardiff City have completed a transfer move to sign Lewes winger Ollie Tanner, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the process. He was due to join the Premier League side but failed to reach an agreement leading to this situation.

Tanner was subjected to interest from the England top division and the Championship in the January transfer window. A move did not materialise back then, prompting Cardiff to make their first move in May. The latter had invited him to train with them, and upon impressing, they decided to sign him this summer.

Steve Morison’s side quickly agreed to terms with the Rooks and the English to finalise a move. He has penned a two-year contract with the Championship side which essentially deals a blow to Tottenham. The youngster revealed that he made this decision because of Morison and how Cardiff gives opportunities to talents, which is perfect for his development.

Blow for Spurs

Losing out on the 20-year-old is undoubtedly a damning blow for Spurs, as they could have added one of the rising superstars to their academy set-up. It is frustrating to see that we could not reach an agreement regarding a transfer, as the club’s future could have been secured with his move.

The Cardiff bound starlet has been excellent for Tony Russell’s side in this campaign, and his performances did not go unrewarded. He won the supporters’ Player of the Season award, which is a nod to how good he has been so far.

Tanner was also a former Arsenal academy star, and signing him could have rubbed more salt in our bitter rivals’ wounds, especially after the recent Champions League blow. BBC has further revealed that Cardiff paid £50,000 in transfer fees to Lewes for the forward, which seems to be a steal for an upcoming superstar.

It is understandable why Tanner decided to join Morison’s side as he could play senior football while being in the Championship. That may not have been the case at North London as he could have probably been playing for our youth teams which is not as challenging as England’s second division.

Perhaps, we could continue to keep tabs on him and see how he develops moving forward. After all, a contract until 2024 is not too long, which means that should he continue on this trajectory, we can try to convince him to join us sometime in the future.
