Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur target Southampton star Fraser Forster this summer
According to The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur are plotting to target Southampton star Fraser Forster for a move in the summer transfer window. He is set to leave St. Mary’s Stadium at the end of the current campaign, which has prompted them to take this stance.
Forster is nearing the end of his contract with the Saints, but they have decided to let him depart this summer. Tottenham are looking to take advantage, and they have made him an ideal target as a backup option for Hugo Lloris moving forward. They are looking to reach an agreement after this Premier League campaign.
Spurs are planning to bring the England international to N17 by next week as they look to strengthen their squad for the next term. Forster has been declared as the preferred target by those at Tottenham to provide support to Lloris in the future.
Good decision from Spurs?
This latest update is quite surprising to the supporters as they were expecting the North London club to sign West Bromwich shot-stopper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer this summer. Johnstone has been linked with a move to Tottenham, but it appears that Forster is one to take over in the next season.
Pierluigi Gollini has played second fiddle to the Spurs captain throughout this term, but he has not showcased enough to warrant a stay moving forward. As such, Gollini is expected to return to Atalanta when his season-long loan deal expires at the end of the current campaign.
Antonio Conte’s side also want a homegrown player in their ranks which is why they have reached this decision. Then again, Johnstone also falls into that category, and he is much more valuable than Forster due to him being much younger than the Saints veteran.
At the same time, Forster does have the advantage of being experienced with the rigours of Premier League football, which may have probably played a part in Spurs’ decision. The former is past his prime days, but he still possesses enough quality to become a solid backup option for us.

The 34-year-old has quite often kept a struggling Southampton defence in check, especially towards the tail end of this season. He also performed splendidly in the 3-2 victory against us and has done the same in the 1-0 victory over Arsenal as well.
Forster has proven that he is capable enough to deputise when given adequate chances, but we have to wait and see whether he would accept the advances from our side in the next week.
