According to La Gazetta Dello Sport via Football Italia (h/t The Daily Mail), Tottenham Hotspur are involved in a three-way race with Manchester United and Manchester City for Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni.

The Italian ace has been a revelation since he joined the Nerazzurri from Parma in 2019. Bastoni has since developed into one of the best young defenders in Serie A and has played a key role in their success over the last couple of years.

A regular under Antonio Conte and now Simone Inzaghi, the youngster has made 44 appearances this season scoring one goal and assisting three more. He is adept at playing in a back three, a system that Conte is keen to deploy at Tottenham.

Conte has worked wonders at N-17, taking Tottenham to next season’s UEFA Champions League. This has given the club a major advantage in their pursuit of bringing in better players and it would not be a stretch to claim that Bastoni fits the bill.

Cristian Romero has impressed at centre-back and looks set to be a pivotal part of Conte’s system. The club do lack a left-sided centre back and bringing in the Inter Milan addresses that issue.

The Italian star’s defensive prowess will also help the left-wingback push further forward, contributing more at the other end of the pitch. Inter for their part are seeking £51m for the 23-year-old’s services. Given that Tottenham had had a cash infusion of £150m, they can afford to make the move.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag remains keen on the player as well and could play spoilsport. The Red Devils are unlikely to be deterred by the asking price as they look to claw their way back to the top.

Man City remain a threat as well and under Pep Guardiola are the eminent side in English football. If anything, they are in a better position than us and can offer Bastonin a better shot at immediate success.

Man United have no Champions League football to offer and are below us in the rebuilding stage. Bastoni will be taking a backwards step by moving to Old Trafford.

Man City however are another matter. But then, given his familiarity with Conte, we hope Bastonis seeks a reunion with the Italian boss at Tottenham. After all, we are a team on the up and he could be part of something special.
