Journo: Paratici held talks in January with Serie A star over potential summer transfer

Alastair Gold says Antonio Conte would like to sign Weston McKennie for Tottenham.

Tottenham Hotspur chief Fabio Paratici held talks with the agent of Weston McKennie over summer move

According to Alasdair Gold of Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur chief Fabio Paratici is believed to have met with the representatives of Juventus star Weston McKennie in January over a possible summer transfer move.

Even though injury complications have limited McKennie’s gametime, he has been able to put in solid performances in some crucial games. The 23-year-old has scored 4 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions this term.

Spurs were interested in signing McKennie in the January transfer window. In the end, the Lilywhites ended up getting Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski instead. However, it seems Fabio Paratici isn’t done yet and seems to be pushing for another signing from his old team.

It is believed that the Spurs chief met with McKennie’s agent at the start of the year to discuss the possibility of a summer transfer. It is not known how much of an effect the transfer talks had on the player’s mind, but having registered genuine interest, Tottenham might have created the bridge for healthy communication.

Tottenham have received a £150million cash injection into the team by the club’s principal owner. The majority of this budget is expected to be spent on players’ arrival. Hence if the American midfielder agrees to switch outfits then Spurs now have added backing in order to strike a deal with Juventus.

How can McKennie help Tottenham?

Even though Tottenham have some quality central midfielders, they can still do with some additions. Antonio Conte could do with a box-to-box midfielder that can help Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in attack while also sharing some defensive workload with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Having been with the Italian outfit for the last two seasons, the 23-year-old has gathered experience and there is little doubt that Paratici and Conte would have tracked his progress, given their past affiliations with the Old Lady.

Apart from league games, he also boasts experience in the UEFA Champions League- a competition Spurs managed to somehow qualify this season on gameweek 38.

Paratici engineered McKennie’s move to Juventus from FC Schalke when he was with the Italian club. Hence, he may have a good relationship with the player and his entourage. If that’s the case, it would certainly help our team have the advantage in the transfer race.

It remains to be seen when the transfer chief restarts transfer talks with McKennie’s agent. As the summer window is approaching our board should hurry their approach in order to avoid excessive competition later on.
