Tottenham Hotspur great Chris Waddle questions Ivan Perisic transfer
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Chris Waddle has doubted the club’s decision to sign Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan this transfer window, as revealed on BoyleSports Premier League (h/t Mirror).
Perisic has worked with Spurs boss Antonio Conte previously during the pair’s time together at the Giuseppe Meazza, where they won the 2020-21 Serie A title. He also impressed under Conte’s successor Simone Inzaghi before running down his contract this summer.
Perisic has also won multiple league titles in Germany, with three Bundesliga winners’ medals – two at Borussia Dortmund and one while on loan at Bayern Munich. During the latter spell, he was part of a treble-winning squad which won the Champions League.
While on national duty, Perisic has been just as influential. He is indispensable to the Croatian team and was part of their inspiring run to the 2018 World Cup final.
Despite all these accolades, Tottenham hero Waddle isn’t convinced by Perisic’s arrival. He is of the opinion that Perisic doesn’t possess the stamina required for the Premier League.
Speaking on the matter, Waddle said:
“Ivan Perisic is a strange signing because he’s not the most physical player, doesn’t have the best stamina, and he’s joining a league where you do need a pair of legs.
“He’s a free transfer, and it’s a little bit against Tottenham’s policies to sign someone like Perisic, but clearly Conte has got his way there, and there will probably be two or three more additions.”
The validity of Waddle’s assessment will be discovered in due time. However, if Perisic’s past record is anything to go by, there is no reason for Tottenham fans to not be excited.
Perisic is a serial winner
At 33, Perisic is not a spring chicken but a serial winner. He has won league titles and domestic trophies everywhere he has been. The Croat was part of a treble-winning squad, and is a Champions League winner. He has also played and scored in a World Cup final.
