Tottenham Hotspur consider making a final attempt to sign Alessandro Bastoni
Tottenham Hotspur are considering a “swap-deal” bid in one final attempt to land top defensive target Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan.
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t the Express), Spurs are prepared to test Inter’s resolve with one last attempt for the highly rated centre-back. The report suggests that Spurs are readying an offer worth £26 million in fees plus Colombian defender Davinson Sanchez.
Bastoni’s agent Tullio Tinti had a fruitful meeting with Inter chiefs on Wednesday regarding the future of his client. Following the discussions, Tinti has claimed that Bastoni is “definitely staying” at Inter.
The development arrived as a huge set-back to Spurs, having identified Bastoni as their top candidate to strengthen their defence.
It was under Antonio Conte that Bastoni broke into Inter’s first team during the pair’s time together at San Siro. Together, they won the Scudetto for Inter Milan en route to which Bastoni played a starring role.
Since then, the young defender has gone from strength to strength and is now regarded as one of the best young defenders in world football currently.
Bastoni played a pivotal role last season as well under new Inter boss Simeone Inzaghi, helping the Nerazzurri to the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles, whilst also challenging for the Scudetto again but falling short by only two points to rivals AC Milan.
Why are Spurs pushing so hard for Bastoni?
It comes as no surprise that Spurs are trying everything they can to get their man but it doesn’t help when the player they are after feels settled at the club he is at.
Spurs do have other defensive targets to consider. RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol and Villarreal’s Pau Torres have been linked to the club, while Middlesborough’s Djed Spence and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Dodo are being considered for the right wingback role.
