Newcastle United in advanced negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur target Sven Botman
If reports are to be believed, then there is some cause of concern for those at Tottenham Hotspur who view LOSC Lille’s star defender Sven Botman as a key transfer target – because Newcastle United have seemingly progressed in negotiations for the Dutch centre-back.
The Magpies had two previous offers for Botman rejected by the Ligue 1 side and seemed to have given up on the deal, after the player’s agent established contact with AC Milan for a potential transfer.
However, The Express is now reporting that Newcastle are back in the driving seat and are close to matching Lille’s asking valuation of £30 million. This development arrives as more setback for Spurs, who now will be running thin of top defensive targets to consider this summer.
The North London club have seemingly lost out on top target Alessandro Bastoni, and now Botman appears to be on the verge of joining the list of misses.
The Dutchman has been subject to transfer speculation for a long time due to his head-turning performances in France. At only 20 years old, he was a commanding figure in defence for Les Dogues during the 2020/21 season and helped the club to 20 clean-sheets and a historic Ligue 1 title.
Are Spurs out of the race for Botman?
Even if a fee is agreed upon between Lille and Newcastle, the Tyneside club will also need to agree terms with Botman’s entourage. According to the Express, Botman is keen on continuing to play Champions League football.
This is where Tottenham can make things interesting. Not only can they offer Champions League football, but they can also offer Botman the chance to work under Antonio Conte – one of the most intelligent minds in football, and world-class footballers like Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.
While Newcastle’s new ownership suggests that the future is bright, Tottenham’s current circumstances are even better for a young defender to experience Premier League and Champions League football.

Lille’s asking price also seems more reasonable in comparison to that of Inter’s for Bastoni, which is something Spurs may take into account. Given the circumstances, making a strong push for Botman to persuade him into moving to North London instead of Tyneside doesn’t seem like a bad idea.
