Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United enquire about AS Roma star Roger Ibanez
According to the Italian publication Il Messaggero (h/t The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have enquired about the possibility of signing AS Roma star Roger Ibanez this summer. He was ever-present for his side last season, having helped them win the UEFA Europa Conference League title.
Tottenham have plans to back Antonio Conte this summer as they look to improve their defence ahead of the next campaign. As such, they have identified Ibanez as a potential option to meet their needs and have also contacted Roma regarding his availability. That is because Conte wants to get things done as soon as possible so that he can work with his new team.
Newcastle would look to scupper Spurs’ plans as they are eager to strengthen their backline as well. They have met the Serie A side to discuss a potential move for Ibanez, having assessed the Italian market just like their competition. Eddie Howe is setting things up for his first summer transfer window as he looks to bring in the central defender.
Ibanez, a summer signing for Spurs?
It is believed that Joe Rodon will be leaving N17 this summer, having struggled to earn meaningful minutes under Conte. As for Japhet Tanganga, he is set to be assessed this pre-season and failure to impress would probably see him shown the exit doors ahead of the upcoming campaign.
It is claimed that the North London side are willing to sell Davinson Sanchez if they receive offers that match their valuation. The trio’s potential departures in and of itself pave the way for the need to bring in a centre-half, considering how Conte uses a three-at-the-back system.
Furthermore, we also have to take into account how Ben Davies has deputised as a left-sided centre-back since Conte took over the managerial job. While Davies has impressed during that period, it is always best to have someone natural who is adept at playing in that position.
Ibanez, who has been on the rise over the past year or so, would be a great signing indeed, looking at his impressive displays. More importantly, the Brazilian would not cost much either despite having an £80million release clause embedded into his current contract in Rome.

That is because Jose Mourinho’s side have set up an asking price of £30million for the 23-year-old’s signature. It would be best to meet their demand as early as possible so that we would not get piped by the Toons in this pursuit.
The Magpies are boosted by their new owners, so Daniel Levy and co must do their best to finalise a move before the competition can flex their financial might in this pursuit.
