Newcastle United enter race to sign Christian Eriksen amidst Tottenham Hotspur transfer interest
According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle United have joined the pursuit of Christian Eriksen amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur for a potential transfer. He is currently a free agent after seeing his contract with Brentford expire this summer.
Eriksen had joined the Bees on a short-term deal in January and had impressed with flying colours. They wanted to keep hold of him but saw their attempt with a renewal offer get turned down by the attacking midfielder. Tottenham are in the fray, but now Newcastle have entered the mix as well.
The Magpies have been interested in the Dane in the past, but they turned their attention to other areas as the priorities lie there even now. However, they have maintained their interest and would look to get hold of the midfielder, especially with him being available on a free transfer.
What’s next for Eriksen?
Even though the entry of the Toons would pose issues for us, we are still considered the frontrunners to securing the 30-year-old’s services ahead of the next season. Manchester United are also on the same boat as us, having held substantive discussions with Eriksen and his agent like us.
We would not need to worry about further competition from Thomas Frank’s side as they have accepted defeat after the Premier League ace decided that it is best for him to move elsewhere. That being said, we now have to face off against Eddie Howe’s team as they have held initial talks with his representatives.
However, Howe’s side do accept that it will be difficult to finalise a move for Eriksen despite their financial might to meet his high wage demands. They believe Spurs and Man United have an advantage over them which should indicate our chances of success at this point.
Then again, we cannot take Newcastle lightly as they are set to make their case directly with Eriksen to put themselves into contention. Fortunately, we are in the lead, which Fabio Paratici should look to make use of by using Champions League football as a lure to convince the midfielder about a potential move.

Furthermore, now that Frank’s team are out of contention, we are the only ones who possess an emotional value in the Danish international’s mind because of his previous tenure at N17. It seems that a return this summer would be perfect for Eriksen as he would get the best possible chance to win a trophy with us now that Antonio Conte is at the helm.
Conte also managed Eriksen at Inter Milan, so perhaps that could play a further part in helping us become the standalone favourites to sign the midfielder. Only time will tell how this race will play out in the next few weeks.
