Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur looking to bid for Juventus star Merih Demiral
According to several Italian sources (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur are looking to table a bid for Juventus star Merih Demiral in this summer transfer window. Centre-back is one such area where the English side could use some reinforcements ahead of a difficult season up ahead.
Demiral was linked with a move to the Premier League in the past, but that could finally be on the cards this summer. Tottenham already prepared a shortlist comprising of options to strengthen their central defence, but he was not among them. However, that has changed now, as they have expressed an interest in signing him.
Spurs are now setting things up to place a bid on the table to Juve for facilitating a move for the Turkish international. Both clubs have close relations with each other, having made business as recently as last January, so perhaps a deal could be stricken after all.
Demiral, a good addition for Spurs?
The 24-year-old was sent out on loan to Atalanta last season, where he was a regular for them for most of the campaign. He made 42 appearances for them, donning their shirt, helping them to 12 clean sheets while scoring two goals and assisting three times in the process across all competitions.
The Serie A ace could be a solid addition to our squad, especially when Antonio Conte had to resort to using Ben Davies as a left-sided centre-half. We must bring in a solid central defender for that reason, as it is always good to have a natural option in hand. Joe Rodon’s desire to leave adds to the list of reasons why Demiral could be useful.
After all, we utilise a three-at-the-back system which calls for the need to maintain a good depth of options. Davinson Sanchez has attracted interest from AS Monaco while Japhet Tanganga is not always reliable, and finally, Cameron Carter-Vickers has completed his permanent move to Celtic this summer.
Furthermore, Demiral could lend us a hand in solving our defensive woes, particularly during set-pieces. That was one problem area for us last season, so one would expect him to significantly improve our ability to deal with those with his exceptional aerial presence. His 3.1 aerial duels won per game in the previous campaign is indicative of that quality.

The Bianconeri ace’s ability to stop dangerous plays at the source is denoted by his successful 1.8 interceptions per game during that same period. One would expect him to perform even better under Conte’s guidance just as the boss did with Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.
That being said, CalcioMercatoWeb via Football.London also claim that Massimiliano Allegri’s side have proposed an exchange deal between Demiral and Sergio Reguilon, so it will be interesting to see how this situation would pan out in this transfer window.
