Tottenham Hotspur in pole position to sign Stefan de Vrij and Pau Torres this summer
According to journalist Paul Brown of Daily Star via GiveMeSport (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur are currently “in pole position” to sign Stefan de Vrij and Pau Torres on potential transfer moves this summer.
They could be the latest reinforcements in line to move to N17 as part of the project the English side is building under Antonio Conte.
Conte wants to make additions to his defensive setup to reinforce his backline ahead of the next season. He could be set to fulfil those demands as Tottenham are the favourites to finalise a move for de Vrij and Torres in this summer transfer window.
De Vrij has been a key cog in Inter Milan’s defence as the Dutchman has helped them to their success in recent seasons. As for Torres, the Spaniard has been an integral part of Villarreal and their impressive run in the last campaign’s Champions League and their Europa League win in the 2020-21 season.
De Vrij and Torres, great additions?
There is no doubt that Conte has come in and bolstered our leaky defence, which played a major part in our top-four finish in last season’s Premier League table. That being said, we are not at an optimal level even now if there are plans to mount a title challenge and end our trophy drought.
The trio of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies had impressed quite well looking at how we played under Nuno Espirito Santo. However, the fans do feel that Dier and Davies could be upgraded, which is where de Vrij and Torres could come in from the upcoming campaign.
Torres would be a like-for-like replacement for Davies as both of them are left-footed, while de Vrij naturally slots in the middle of the three at the back system for Dier. That would give us enough depth and quality across the board, with Romero being backed up by Davinson Sanchez as well.
If we can complete moves for de Vrij and Torres, that would also help us cope with the potential departures of other players in defence. Joe Rodon, for example, has struggled to break into Conte’s plans and could leave N17 with AS Roma and Nottingham Forest being interested in signing him.
Japhet Tanganga, on the other hand, is not the most reliable of options as he lacked consistency when he featured for us before suffering the long-term injury. Torres and de Vrij’s signings would help to deal with the outgoings that could take place in the central defence.

De Vrij’s experience of working with Conte could come in handy as it would help the 30-year-old to seamlessly slot into our defence. Torres has also been immense for Spain as the 25-year-old has assisted Luis Enrique in rebuilding the national team, indicating how the defender could be ready to take the next step in his career.
