Transfer News: Tottenham yet to make progress in a deal for young English defender

Tottenham Hotspur signed Djed Spence from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022.

Tottenham Hotspur have not made progress in their pursuit of Middlesbrough star Djed Spence

According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur have not made any progress in their pursuit to sign Middlesbrough star Djed Spence this summer. He had enjoyed a great time on loan at Nottingham Forest last season and would undoubtedly be a great addition to the former’s squad.

Spence appears to have no intention to stay with Boro any longer and has set his eyes on a move to the English top-flight ahead of the next campaign. He has been linked with a move to Tottenham as a result, with his manager Chris Wilder suggesting that the right-back wants to join the Premier League team.

Wilder has also confirmed the interest from Spurs, but they have not covered any grounds so far in their attempt to complete a move for Spence. That is not a great piece of news if they hope to add the English defender to their ranks and bolster the team in the process.

Frustrations for Spurs

Perhaps, the North London club’s hesitance to meet the Championship side’s validation of Spence could explain why no progress has been made so far. Boro want to receive a sum of over £15million, including bonuses, which is quite expensive indeed for someone who just has enjoyed a breakthrough season.

Sky Sports claim that Antonio Conte’s side only rates the 21-year-old above £10million but not close to what Chris Wilder’s club wants for him. We still have funds left from the £100million cash investment that was made to the transfer budget at this point.

However, that does not mean we should just spend lavishly in the market as we have several areas that must be bolstered this summer. The centre-back role and the striker position are two such areas that require additions if there are plans to mount a title challenge moving forward.

If the situation continues to remain the same, it would be best if we decide to search for alternative options as we have to focus on other areas as well. Lens’ Jonathan Claus and Wilfried Singo of Torino are two such options who are on our shortlist at this moment.

Nordi Mukiele from RB Leipzig has also been touted to have emerged as a potential option, so we have some room to work with in terms of our choices. We cannot allow Boro to take advantage of our needs, so Daniel Levy and co should prepare for a scenario where they may have to end their interest in Spence.
