Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur express interest in Inter Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu
According to the Italian news outlet Calciomercato (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur have expressed their interest in signing Inter Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu in this summer transfer window. He could be on the move once again, having joined his side only at the start of the last season.
Antonio Conte is keen on getting his hands on Calhanoglu and has asked Tottenham to fulfil his wishes ahead of the next campaign. That being said, it is unknown whether Inter would be interested in selling their player after signing him on a free transfer from AC Milan last summer.
The 28-year-old midfielder still has two years left in his current contract with the Nerazzurri, so doubts can be raised about whether he would want to leave them after enjoying a great season on a personal level. That being said, it is stated that a potential swap deal could be on the cards, so only time will tell whether that is the case or not this summer.
Calhanoglu to Spurs?
The Turkish international was an instant hit at Giuseppe Meazza, having scored eight goals and assisted 13 times from 46 matches across all competitions. Primarily a central midfielder by trade, he has shown flexibility to be utilised in other positions like left-wing and even as a number ten.
We lack someone in midfield who can make an impact when it comes to goal involvements at this point. The likes of Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and the new signing Yves Bissouma are great options, but they do not necessarily pose a threat in the attacking phase.
We are also in line to lose Harry Winks, so signing another midfielder would help to maintain the depth in our ranks. Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso are set to return from their loan spells, but it is likely that they have no future with us since Conte allowed them to depart back in January.
Fortunately, we are handed an opportunity to solve two issues at once as an exchange deal between Lo Celso and Calhanoglu is said to be possible. If that is the case, then we must consider that approach as it would help us meet two of our needs in one move.
Davinson Sanchez is also tipped to be included as a makeweight in the potential swap deal with Calhanoglu. However, we need to maintain our depth in the centre-back positions, so it would be wise to keep hold of Sanchez and part ways with Lo Celso in this case- who is a midfielder Conte let go of in a winter loan deal.
