Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma to go head-to-head for Clement Lenglet
According to Sport and Mundo Deportivo via Sportwitness (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma are set to battle it out for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet this summer. Jose Mourinho is giving his old club a headache by leading the race for the defender’s signature.
Lenglet fell down the pecking order at Barcelona, following the arrival of Ronald Araujo from Barcelona B. He just made 21 appearances for the Blaugrana in the league, starting in just seven of them.
The French international joined Barcelona in 2018 from Sevilla. Signed to be a first-team player, Lenglet has put in some poor performances in the past few seasons. It is fair to say that he could do with a fresh start elsewhere. Now it seems he may be heading out of the club with either London or Rome being his possible destination.
A good signing?
Antonio Conte has been revamping his squad this summer, following a fourth-place finish last season. Spurs have already signed Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Fraser Forster, and are linked with Raphinha and Djed Spence.
Last season, Tottenham conceded a total of 40 goals in the League. Conte will be aware of this problem and would like to reduce that number. A centre-back is needed and Lenglet could help solve the problem.
The 27-year-old still has great potential in him, despite playing very limited last season. Currently, the preferred options at the back for Conte are Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Eric Dier.
Signing Lenglet would add depth to the squad and also help in increasing competition among other defenders within the squad. His experience also would help him as he is accustomed to playing at the highest level.

The Frenchman’s signature could help Conte be less worried about the back. But it won’t be easy and Tottenham know that. They should play their cards well if they want to bring the 27-year-old to London.
