Transfer news: Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn has snubbed a move to Everton in favour of Ajax Amsterdam.
According to Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf(h/t Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has snubbed a move to Everton in favour of Ajax. The report adds that he was offered to Everton as part of the Richarlison deal.
Bergwijn is said to have rejected the move as he wants to move back home to play regular football ahead of the World Cup in November. The report also adds that he prefers Ajax because they can offer Champions League football.
The Dutchman moved to Tottenham from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 in a deal worth £27 million. However, he has failed to gain the trust of coach Antonio Conte and could now leave.
The 24-year-old managed to make only 25 appearances in the league last season, mostly as a substitute and managed to score only three goals and make one assist.
A win-win for all involved
Ahead of the summer transfer window, the former Eindhoven man had declared that he wanted to leave Spurs. It was clear why so, as he had failed to gain the trust of Conte and improve his playing time. It seems now his wish could come true.
Conte has been revamping his squad and has added Ivan Perisic. Also Tottenham today agreed in principle regarding a deal involving Richarlison. This would mean that the Dutchman could have potentially fallen down the pecking order more.
A move for him would be beneficial for all parties involved. It was very unlikely that Conte would have trusted him again next season, especially after his public declaration to leave. The Dutchman, meanwhile, could get his desired playing time at Ajax with hopes of making it to Louis van Gaal’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar in November.
Bergwijn could receive a hostile welcome from PSV Eindhoven fans as he is looking set to join their rivals Ajax. A decent winger who can also play as a centre-forward when required, Bergwijn has huge potential in him.

Some sections of the Spurs fans will be disappointed to see him leave. But this is for the best. His heroic two goals against Leicester City in the incredible 3-2 comeback did contribute to Spurs’ top-four finish and the fans will remember that for quite some time.
