Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur are in ‘advanced talks’ for Middlesbrough full-back Djed Spence
According to Sky Sports (h/t the Independent), Tottenham are in advanced talks for Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence. Spurs are currently negotiating a deal worth £15million plus add-ons.
Spurs have signed two right-backs in two years with Matt Doherty And Emerson Royal. Under Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo, both the players have disappointed and been below par on most occasions.
When the Irish national was bought from Wolves, he had already established himself at Molineux as one of the best full-backs in the league. Considering his form, Tottenham decided to get the player to North London.
Spence Tottenham’s third right-back in 3 years
But Doherty hasn’t lived up to expectations. He was quickly sidelined by Mourinho and was left on the bench for most of his debut season. Emerson hasn’t fared all that well either.
Although, the former Barcelona defender has been the preferred choice in that area and featured regularly last season. Doherty, however, finished the campaign in a much stronger way.
But there is a feeling amongst the fans that Spurs can upgrade in that position. Spence, as inexperienced as he may be right now, could be that man.
With the Irish national’s injury though, Emerson came into his own and helped Spurs to the top four. Both our right-backs impressed but have mostly been inconsistent.
Spence was one of the best full-backs in the Championship last season. With Tottenham interested in his signing, it’ll be a third right-back in 3 years at Spurs.
It will be interesting to see how Conte decides to use the three options on the right and what the future holds for them. When it comes to Spence, it seems like a saga needlessly dragged on. The earlier we seal the deal, the better.
