Transfer News: Djed Spence expected to have Tottenham Hotspur medical soon
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Metro], Djed Spence is close to a move to Tottenham Hotspur, with a medical expected shortly.
There has been a breakthrough as Daniel Levy negotiates a fee with Middlesbrough for the 21-year-old. The full-back has also been linked with North London rivals Arsenal.
After an impressive loan spell with Nottingham Forest, the Tricky Trees were also interested in bringing Spence permanently to Nottinghamshire. The 21-year-old helped Forest get promoted to the Premier League for the first time since 1999.
Spurs are now the favourites to get the coveted signature. The fee is expected to be in the region of £12 million to £20 million.
For the Tricky Trees, the full-back featured in 50 games scoring three goals and providing five assists. Spence often played in a wing-back role for the West Bridgford-based club.
Spence gives Conte options
If we do end up signing the young full-back, Antonio Conte will have three options at his disposal for the right-hand side in the back five. Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty are the players in Tottenham’s squad currently capable of playing in the wing-back position.
Both our current full-backs haven’t really lit up the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in their time at the club. Doherty has been disappointing since his arrival in 2020. Emerson has struggled at the start of his Premier League career.
Spence has never experienced top-flight football in his career, only ever playing in the Championship with Boro and Forest. It remains to be seen who Conte prefers in his XI next season.
