Tottenham Hotspur full-back Matt Doherty plans to ‘stay and fight’ for place in squad for upcoming season
Matt Doherty has expressed his desire to stay and fight for a place at Tottenham Hotspur for the upcoming campaign as Antonio Conte tries to build something special in North London.
With uncertainty around his future, The Ireland international looks determined to be at the club next season. He claims there hasn’t been a conversation with the club about him leaving.
When asked whether he expects to stay at the club the 30-year-old seemed to have no doubts about his future with the Lilywhites. Speaking while on tour with Tottenham in South Korea (h/t football.london), Doherty made his expectations clear.
“Of course. I haven’t been told otherwise. My plan is to stay and fight for my place.”
Doherty arrived to the North London side back in 2020. When Jose Mourinho was in charge, the 30-year-old had a string of bad performances and was subsequently left on the bench.
Over time, fans have lost faith in the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star. At the Molineux Stadium, Doherty made a name for himself. Tottenham then decided to acquire his services.
The 30-year-old is looking forward to the next season though. Spurs have splashed the cash on good signings this summer and strengthened the squad. And the Irish national wants to stay.
“We’ve got an exciting season ahead. Why would I want to go anywhere else?”
Doherty’s performances have been disappointing for the most part. The 2021/22 season saw the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo, the 30-year-old’s former manager at Wolves.
But the arrival of Emerson Royal relegated the Irishman to the bench. Doherty featured in just 14 Premier League games in the previous campaign as Nuno didn’t fancy him either.

The appointment of Antonio Conte has rejuvenated the 30-year-old. Spectators saw a glimpse of his best football under the Italian until an injury ruled him out in April. If he does stay, fans will hope Doherty can get back to his best and help the squad compete for trophies next season.
