AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini contacts Tottenham Hotspur regarding Japhet Tanganga
AC Milan technical director has contacted Tottenham Hotspur regarding a loan deal for young defender Japhet Tanganga. The 23-year-old is on top of the Rossoneri’s wish list for this summer.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t football.london), the Serie A champions are looking to freshen up their squad after winning their first Scudetto in 11 years. Given the role their solid rearguard played in the success last season, it is no wonder why Stefano Pioli is keen on adding Tangana to the roster.
The young Englishman has been garnering interest from various clubs during this transfer window. Newcastle United are also interested in signing him as the 2022/23 campaign draws near.
After an eventful summer at Tottenham, a clearout is inevitable, with certain players’ futures uncertain. Tanganga has been working with the squad during the pre-season.
The 23-year-old was a key part of Antonio Conte’s side. When the Italian manager initially arrived, Tanganga featured heavily in the team. But an injury has limited his opportunities since February.
Conte has been heavily backed this summer at Tottenham. The defence has been an important area for the Italian to tinker with and a lack of trust in certain players have left the squad shorthanded in the centre-back area. Adding strength in depth could address that concern.
Tanganga is a capable young defender and one Conte seemingly had in his plans last season. But it remains to be seen whether the Italian will trust the youngster if he stays this summer.
What is an advantage for Tanganga is his versatility. The 23-year-old is also capable enough to be deployed at the right-back position. A player like him gives the manager plenty of options in times of need.

Fans will want Tanganga to stay even if it is for a bit-part role under Conte. The team needs depth in the defensive positions for next season. And unless other additions arrive, it’ll be wise to keep the academy product at the club.
The Rossoneri hit the jackpot when they took a leap of faith in signing Fikayo Tomori from Chelsea last season. Whether Tottenham will be the London-based side to be taken for a ride this summer remains to be seen.
