Djed Spence tells what he will bring to Tottenham as defender gives first interview
Speaking to the official Tottenham Hotspur club media (as quoted by the Daily Mail), Djed Spence revealed that he will bring ‘excitement, skill, speed’ to the club next season.
The right-back has become our sixth signing this summer after a deal with Middlesbrough was agreed this summer. Still just 21, Spence has a lot of time left to enter his peak years.
Speaking in the interview, Spence stated that it is a dream come true to be able to play for a club like Tottenham. Having qualified for the UEFA Champions League last season, it is clear that we are still a major draw for some of Europe’s most ambitious youngsters.
“Playing in the Premier League for a big club like Tottenham Hotspur is a dream come true. I’m just thankful to have the opportunity to be here and to play for the club. Everyone wants to play in the Premier League and as a kid you watch it, it was a target of mine.”
Those who would have seen Spence play on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship last summer would know all about his skills. A pacey customer down the right-hand side, Spence likes to help out his team in attack.
“A big club, Champions League football and you’ve got some of the best players that play here so it’s a privilege to be here. I’ll bring excitement, skill, speed, I just want to excite the fans and just play well.”
This is certainly a smart coup by the club. And it is for Spence as well. It is certainly a more exciting prospect to fight for a place in a team playing UCL football rather than returning to Middlesbrough in the Championship.
Emerson Royal may have featured constantly under Antonio Conte last season, but he is clearly not up to the mark in terms of quality. The former Barcelona defender can now look forward to some serious competition from Spence.

Matt Doherty is a similar case, with the former Wolves defender failing to impress on a regular basis. Hopefully, Spence integrates into the squad as soon as possible and we don’t have to worry about the right-wing-back position for years to come.
