Antonio Conte not surprised by Tottenham Hotspur’s rival spending ‘a lot of money’
Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte, in an interview with Football.London (h/t the Mirror), claimed that it is normal for teams to spend a lot of money in the Premier League.
Manchester City have signed Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips. Liverpool brought in Darwin Nunez, while Arsenal have already signed Gabriel Jesus. Spurs’ arch-rivals Chelsea are doing some neat business as well.
The Blues have seen the arrivals of Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly, with Jules Kounde next on their list. Spurs have done a lot of business this summer – six signings to be exact, with Djed Spence being the latest one.
The players mentioned above are top-quality professionals, and they cost a pretty penny. According to Conte, it is important for Spurs to sign players because they will be competing for trophies on all four fronts next season.
“Now we move at the right time to try to improve the team and the quality aspect, and also the numerical aspect because we have four competitions… and if we want to be competitive we have to have a good squad but we have to know that we have just started this path.”
The former Italian manager knows the task at hand. He recognises that teams around Spurs, especially those above them in the table last season, would also want to do the same and strengthen the squad.
“I see that other teams, they are signing important players and they’ve spent a lot of money, but it’s normal in England because the level is very high and the others have the same idea.”
More importantly, the fact that Spurs’ main players are still at the club makes it certain that Spurs will end this summer window a stronger, more complete team as compared to last season.
Having signed the likes of Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, and Richarlison ourselves, Spurs cannot be too envious of what other teams are doing. These are all astute acquisitions, after all.
