Romano: AC Milan hold talks with Tottenham Hotspur for Pape Matar Sarr loan
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, AC Milan have held talks with Tottenham Hotspur regarding a potential loan move for Pape Matar Sarr.
He added that there haven’t been any offers as of now and that the two teams have only held conversations about Sarr as well as Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga.
Pape Sarr is amongst the headlines this week after winning the CAF Young Player of the Year Award for 2022. He was in the Senegal team that lifted their first-ever AFCON title, doing so under Aliou Cisse earlier this year.
He was also a regular feature for an FC Metz side that succumbed to relegation from Ligue 1 this season. The 19-year-old starlet is yet to make a senior appearance for Spurs but has featured this month in Tottenham’s colours.
A good potential move?
He came on as a substitute for the Lilywhites in both their pre-season friendlies so far this month. This includes a 6-3 win against K League XI and a 1-1 draw against Sevilla.
Spurs are set to take on Rangers at Ibrox later this weekend. Sarr signed for Tottenham last summer from Metz but spent the last campaign playing for the French side on loan.
The teenager is still in his formative years and regular playing time would be important in that regard. Given that AC Milan are Serie A champions, they would look to defend their crown.
It would be illogical, at least right now, to think a team fighting for the league title would make Sarr, a rather inexperienced teenager, a regular starter there. But in football, anything can happen.

One of their current midfielders, Sandro Tanoli, started out young and became a regular starter for his team at the age of just 17 – albeit in Serie B. If they have the bandwidth to hand regular minutes to Sarr, then there are very few better clubs to play at than Milan.
