Tottenham Hotspur starlet Pape Matar Sarr wins CAF Young Player of the Year

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr has been crowned as the Men’s Young Player of the Year at the 2022 Confederation of African Football (CAF) awards, as confirmed by the official club website.

He made the final three-man shortlist alongside Moroccan midfielder Hannibal Mejbri and Ivory Coast centre-back Karim Konate. The former plays for Manchester United while the latter represents RB Salzburg.

Sarr eventually won the award following a successful season with Senegal in the AFCON, a trophy which they won, and with Metz in Ligue 1. Sarr arrived from Metz last summer but spent the following campaign on loan at the Stade Municipal Saint-Symphorien.

The 19-year-old central midfielder made 33 league appearances for Metz but could not save them from being relegated to Ligue 2. He is now back at Tottenham and ready for the season ahead.

Big win for Sarr

It remains to be seen what plans Antonio Conte has for him. Still a teenager, he has a long way to go before he can become a regular fixture in our star-studded midfield line-up.

Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will all vie for starts next season. Sarr can, of course, get a few games here and there, especially in cup competitions.

After all, he already has eight senior caps to his name for the Lions of Teranga. One of those came in a 3-1 win against Burkina Faso in the 2022 AFCON semi-final.

Sarr’s talent has now been recognised for the world to sit up and take notice. Spurs were a step ahead of others and already secured his services last year – a decision that could prove to pay big dividends in the future.
