Tottenham spoke to Matthijs de Ligt before Bayern Munich transfer
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato via Inside Futbol (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur contacted Juventus for a potential transfer involving Matthijs de Ligt.
The Dutch defender was heavily linked with a move away from the Allianz Stadium this summer. However, Spurs’ inquiries bore no fruit as they were put off by his price tag.
As things turned out, the former Ajax defender moved to Bayern Munich instead. He cost the German giants a potential fee in the region of €80million.
Spurs have been active during the current window. They have already signed a centre-back in Clement Lenglet from Barcelona and a young right-back in Djed Spence from Middlesbrough.
However, he isn’t seen as a permanent solution at the back due to the fact that he has joined us on a season-long loan deal. Hopefully, Conte is looking to address this matter.
Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez have clearly not gained the Italian’s trust. They struggled for game time while left-back Ben Davies was deployed as a left-sided centre-half.
Cristian Romero is good and Eric Dier is dependable. Lenglet can step in for this season but the club still needs to actively find a world-class option at the back.
Chelsea recently signed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli. The Senegalese international has experience and is a rugged defender who puts his body in the line.
