Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga’s AC Milan held up by contract clause
According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur want an obligation-to-buy clause inserted into a contract for Japhet Tanganga if he moves to AC Milan.
However, it is said that I Rossoneri cannot afford it. The Italian giants won the Serie A last season and would look to retain their title in the 2022/23 campaign.
For that purpose, they have been looking to strengthen their team in multiple areas. One of the players they have signed this season is Alessandro Florenzi from AS Roma.
They already have Davide Calabria in that position so if they do sign Tanganga, it would perhaps be so that he can play as a centre-back. The English defender is adept at playing in a two or three-man backline.
Tanganga considered expendable
But even then, he won’t have it easy. The likes of Fikayo Tomori and Simon Kjaer will make it difficult for him to become a regular starter.
However, it is better for the player to play at a club that wants him and for a manager that may have a plan for him. Antonio Conte evidently does not.
The Italian manager was reluctant to start Tanganga regularly last season and consistently preferred playing Ben Davies with Eric Dier and Cristian Romero in defence. Tanganga was largely restricted to the bench.
Spurs haven’t strengthened their defence to an extent where they can feel comfortable about selling centre-backs for fun. Clement Lenglet is only here on a season-long loan.

Tottenham’s willingness to bind Milan to a contract that forces them into permanently buying the 23-year-old defender shows they do not view the player as a part of the club in the near future.
