Peter Schmeichel backs Tottenham Hotspur to compete for PL title because of Antonio Conte
Speaking to The Times (Subscription Required), Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel claimed that Tottenham Hotspur would challenge for the Premier League title because of Antonio Conte.
The Italian manager led Spurs to a top-four finish last season – something which looked out of reach when Nuno Espirito Santo was in charge. Conte’s track record in European football makes him one of the best in the business.
He has won the league title with Juventus, Chelsea, and Inter Milan as a manager. There is hardly a better candidate for Spurs when it comes to appointing the man that ends their trophy drought.
According to Schmeichel, who won five first division titles and one UEFA Champions League trophy during his time in England, Spurs pose a threat to Liverpool and Manchester City in the race for the PL crown.
“The competition [to Liverpool and Man City] will come from Chelsea, and from Spurs, who have signed well and in Antonio Conte have a very clever manager who is so good at getting the maximum out of his players.”
It is curious to note that Schmeichel doesn’t mention his team, Manchester United, as a serious challenger for the title. Chelsea finished third last season and have had a mixed transfer window so far.
They lost several important players and only signed Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling. Spurs, meanwhile, have retained their superstars and added six new names to the mix.
Richarlison, Ivan Perisic, Djed Spence, Fraser Forster, Clement Lenglet (loan), and Yves Bissoume all either strengthen our starting XI or considerably add depth to our bench.

City and Liverpool have looked insurmountable at the top for a while. But if anyone can end their duopoly, it is Conte.
His team has strengthened significantly this summer and he looks to have the pieces he needs to mount a real challenge for the PL crown.
