Confirmed: Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon completes move to Rennes
According to the Athletic (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur defender has officially completed his move to Rennes on a season-long loan.
The Wales international struggled for playing time under Antonio Conte last season and will now play in Ligue 1, hoping to impress Stade Rennais boss Bruno Genesio.
The deal also has a clause whereby the French side can permanently buy the former Swansea star next summer for around €20 million.
Rodon has continued to be a regular in Robert Page’s Wales side despite not getting much playing time at Spurs. With the FIFA World Cup around the corner, regular starts at Rennes can cement his place as a starter in the Wales squad.
Not to mention, it will keep him warmed up for the big test in Qatar. Speaking on the move, Rennes technical director Florian Maurice said:
“It went very quickly, there was no hesitation. He was enthusiastic about the Rennes project. He was there a few months ago to play against us and he was able to discover our team, the football we played and he was interested.”
Giving Rennes the option to buy him from our hands showcases the lack of trust in Rodon with the long-term picture in mind. He wasn’t a Conte signing, after all, so there is every chance that the Italian manager doesn’t see him as a fit for his defence.
We are yet to sign a defender on a permanent basis this summer, with Clement Lenglet arriving only on a loan spell from Barcelona. However, if Rodon does leave N17 permanently next year, the club will cut their losses on him to a great extent.
