Tottenham Transfer News: AC Milan turn to Davinson Sanchez after failed Japhet Tanganga pursuit
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it (h/t Football.London), AC Milan are now eyeing a deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez.
I Rossoneri‘s interest in Japhet Tanganga this summer is no secret. However, they failed to sign the Englishman on a loan deal and have now turned their attention to Sanchez instead.
The Colombia international joined Spurs from Ajax Amsterdam in the summer of 2017 for a then club-record fee of £42million. However, he has failed to cement himself as one of our starting centre-backs since then.
He has managed only 41 out of a possible 76 Premier League appearances for Spurs in the last two full seasons combined. That isn’t a great return for him but it does show that he has been utilised by Antonio Conte and the managers before him whenever the need has arisen.
What should Spurs do?
Now 26, Sanchez is arguably in the prime physical years of his playing career. Conte must realise that the club needs depth at the back.
Joe Rodon has already left for Rennes while Ben Davies continues to play out-of-position as a left-sided centre-back. Tanganga, meanwhile, struggled for playing time under the Italian manager last season.
It highlighted Conte’s lack of trust in the 22-year-old as he handed him just 373 minutes of league football since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm. Sanchez is a solid defender on his day and can do a job when required.

His presence assumes more importance because of our participation in the UEFA Champions League. Conte cannot play the same XI every week and hence, the club would be wise to assess all aspects of the squad’s depth before letting a player like Sanchez leave, be it on loan or a permanent transfer.
