Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Lyon’s Lucas Paqueta
According to Football.London (h/t Evening Standard), Tottenham Hotspur are tracking Lucas Paqueta. The attacking midfielder is of interest to a number of clubs including Arsenal and Newcastle United.
Olympique Lyon are fighting to keep the Brazilian in their squad for this season. There are suggestions that the 24-year-old could be available for a cut-price fee of just £33 million.
However, Antonio Conte is currently prioritising the sale of players after having spent big and bringing in six new signings this summer. But that does not mean there is no place for any new player.
Paqueta joined Lyon in 2020 from AC Milan. Since then, the 24-year-old has established himself in the French team. One of the best up-and-coming midfielders, he has the potential to become one of the best in the world.
The Brazilian international scored 10 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions for Lyon last season. Should he move to London, he will join Yves Bissouma as the new midfielders in the Spurs side.
Signing another midfielder would not make much sense for Conte. The Italian coach has quite a full plate of options in the middle of the park. Signing another would help add depth, but could stall the development of the player.
The player is a regular for Lyon, something that he would not likely be at Tottenham. With the World Cup in November, Paqueta will want to play as much as possible if he wishes to make the Brazilian squad.

It is hard to see where he fits into the picture especially after us signing Yves Bissouma this summer. He would be a good signing, but it remains to be seen if he will be accepting of a role where he wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter.
