Transfer News: Manchester United decline to sign long-term Tottenham target Weston McKennie

According to the Daily Telegraph (h/t the Express), Manchester United have declined the chance to sign Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

The USMNT international is a player who has ‘long been linked with’ Spurs this summer. However, it seems that Spurs have since cooled their interest in the 23-year-old.

Tottenham have been linked with the likes of Nicolo Zaniolo of AS Roma and Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovskyi recently. If that is anything to go by, then the Lilywhites are searching for a new midfielder who can play a little further up the pitch as well.

It is unknown why Tottenham have slowed down in their apparent pursuit of McKennie, but he is a talented player who could have been of use for us.

What next for Spurs

The former Schalke 04 star can play as a central midfielder as well as a right midfielder – a position Conte can and does utilise in his 3-4-2-1 set-up at the club. Currently, the Italian manager started Emerson Royal in both our league games in that area.

The former Barcelona man has done well, but there is a feeling that perhaps the club can either upgrade or strengthen in that position. Nevertheless, we have made a signing in the right-wing-back area.

Djed Spence arrived from Middlesbrough in a potential £20 deal but Conte was quick to make it very clear that the Englishman was a club signing, rather than a player he recommended. It only shows that he is yet to gain full faith in Spence.

More Tottenham News:

McKennie recently started in Max Allegri’s Juve side that beat Sassuolo 3-0 on the opening day of the Serie A season, playing as a left-midfielder. I Bianconeri are a club that Spurs have done business with recently, with former Juventus employee Fabio Paratici bringing in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur to N17 this January.
