Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur were keen on a late move for Gelson Martins
According to the Express, Tottenham Hotspur discussed a late move for Gelson Martins. Spurs did not sign anyone on the deadline day.
The 27-year-old is said to be keen to join a Premier League side. And Spurs discussed him. This came after Daniel James was close to joining Fulham on a season-long loan.
James was linked with a surprise move to north London, with Antonio Conte looking to bolster his attacking options further. However, nothing came of that and the Leeds United winger joined Fulham.
Bryan Gil was to leave Spurs this window and a move back to Valencia on loan was almost done. But that move collapsed in the final hours and Gil is still a Tottenham player.
Martins was an option that would fit Conte’s playing style very well. The AS Monaco man is capable of playing on either side of the wings and has a terrifying pace. However, nothing could come to pass as Gil’s deal collapsed.
But that does not mean Conte is out of options in the attacking front. The Italian manager has six attackers available at his services, including new signing Richarlison. Dejan Kulusevski and Heung-min Son have started games with Harry Kane in the middle this season.
With Gil staying back, the winger could also get some playing time this season. Lucas Moura is another option available, though he is yet to start a game this season. Conte is very unlikely to regret that he missed out on both James and Martins, but will hope that the backup players don’t make him regret his decision.
