Tottenham Hotspur could be given option to rearrange upcoming UCL fixture vs Sporting CP

According to Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan on Twitter, British clubs including Tottenham Hotspur could be given the option to rearrange their European fixtures if they wanted to do so.

The Premier League has already announced that this weekend’s matches will be postponed in order to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away yesterday at the age of 96. In the past hours, British football fans have questioned the fate of their team’s upcoming fixtures as a result.

Keegan’s Tweet regarding the matter of European matches reads:

“With regards to next week’s European fixtures, I’m told it’s ‘inconceivable’ that British clubs would not be given the option to rearrange by UEFA, should they wish to do so.”

Spurs took on Olympique de Marseille in their opening UEFA Champions League group stage fixture earlier this week and won the game 2-0. They are now scheduled to take on Sporting CP on September 13 in Lisbon.

It is now confirmed that their game against Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday will not go ahead. It remains to be seen what happens – if anything – to their league fixture against Leicester City in north London on September 17.

Yesterday, Arsenal, West Ham United, and Manchester United all played their respective European games. However, this doesn’t automatically ensure that British clubs will play at the scheduled date in next week’s fixtures.

Spurs would be wise to take up the option of playing the game on the prescribed date if they are given the option to do so. This would ensure that there isn’t further fixture congestion to worry about later on.

However, it is up to the club and those associated with it when it comes to making a call like this. Elsewhere, Premier League clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City could also get such an option for their respective UCL fixtures.
