Journo: Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte “not the biggest fan” of Emerson Royal
Journalist Paul Brown, speaking to GiveMeSport (h/t Football.London) claimed that Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is not the biggest fan of Emerson Royal.
This would come as a surprise to Spurs fans considering the Brazil international’s start to this season. Emerson has started down the right flank in all seven of Tottenham’s games this season.
He has been taken off just thrice, with the latest instance being in our 2-0 win in the UEFA Champions League against Olympique de Marseille. Emerson was signed from Barcelona last year by manager Nuno Espirito Santo for a transfer fee of €25million.
Conte has made regular use of the Brazilian full-back ever since replacing the Portuguese manager. Matt Doherty has struggled to make himself a regular starter in Emerson’s presence while Djed Spence only has one appearance – as a last-minute substitute against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League – this season.
According to Brown, however, Conte isn’t Emerson’s biggest fan in the world. He said:
“It’s no secret that Conte is not the biggest fan of Emerson Royal, so to see him starting every week might be a surprise to some Spurs fans. But he must be doing something right.”
Emerson has one assist this season, which came in our opening day win against Southampton. The 23-year-old, who has six caps for Brazil, has often divided opinions among the Spurs faithful.
However, he has been pretty good this season and hasn’t done anything to warrant being potentially dropped from the starting XI. However, he has failed to catch Brazil manager Tite’s eyes.

Richarlison has been named in Brazil’s last squad before the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but Emerson hasn’t. Perhaps a run of good games in the coming weeks can help him stake a claim for being included in his country’s squad for the World Cup in November.
