According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has urged his players to cut down on mistakes following their Champions League gameweek two defeat to Portuguese giants Sporting CP.

The north Londoners went into the game on the back of an unbeaten start to the season that saw them impress across multiple fronts. Having won their opening game against Olympique Marseille, Spurs had a chance to gain a stranglehold on their group with a win in Portugal.

In what was an even contest, it was the home side that came up trumps in the final minutes of the game. With the match looking set to end in a draw, Paulinho broke Spurs’ hearts with a 90th-minute strike to break the deadlock.

With the Lilywhites now forced to chase the game, Conte’s men were forced to throw the kitchen sink at the opposition in the dying minutes. It came back to bite them as Arthur Gomes slotted home a 93rd-minute goal to put the result beyond doubt.

A visibly irked Conte did not hold back in the post-match presser and admitted that mistakes cost his side on the night. Given the quality on offer in Europe’s top competition,

“The Champions League level is very high. You have to reduce the mistakes because at the end you can pay and we paid, we paid a lot.”

Tottenham had their opportunities but failed to take them on the night. The smallest of margins can decide games in the Champions League and Spurs have nobody but themselves to blame for the loss.

“We had two or three situations where we could have done much better but now we must rest and think about the Premier League.”

While it was a harsh lesson to learn, we are glad that the humbling came early in the campaign to keep the players on their toes. Hopefully, the manager and the squad have learned from the experience and will now be more pragmatic in their future games.
