Jermaine Jenas slams sloppy Tottenham Hotspur performance away to Sporting Lisbon
According to The Daily Mail, former English international Jermaine Jenas has given a scathing verdict as Tottenham Hotspur fell to a late loss against Sporting Lisbon.
The north Londoners went into their second UEFA Champions League game of the season undefeated. The game looked to be headed towards a goalless draw only for Sporting CP to break the impasse twice in stoppage time.
Substitutes Paulinho and Arthur scored in the 90th and 93rd minutes respectively to consign Antonio Conte’s men to their first loss of the campaign. While it does not derail our hopes of progressing to the last 16, it does provide the squad with a reality check.
Speaking after the game, Jenas held back no punches in his appraisal of the performance. He believes that while Sporting did not particularly impress, Tottenham displayed little to warrant a win.
“I think Spurs just did not turn up, again, if I’m totally honest.”
He goes on to add that these deficiencies were also apparent in our Champions League opener against Marseille. While we did get over the line that night, lightning did not strike while in Portugal.
“They spent 65 minutes against Marseille getting away with it and got the result based on a red card in that game. They’ve turned up to Lisbon today and not turned up again.”
While losing a game is never good, this setback could prove to be beneficial in the long run. Despite our results of late, Tottenham have lacked conviction and there are only so many times that we can rely on luck.
Hopefully, this acts as a wake-up call, leaving no place for complacency in the games to come. With much to play for, there is still much for the Lilywhites to learn and achieve.
