Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma eyeing January deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga
According to a tweet by Italian journalist Rudy Galetti (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga is on the transfer radar of AS Roma ahead of the January window.
Jose Mourinho apparently wants to sign a new centre-back this winter and Tanganga is one of the names on his shortlist. The 23-year-old Englishman is finding playing time very hard to come by under manager Antonio Conte.
He has had just 17 minutes of action in competitive games since the start of this season. It has become clear that he will find it very hard to make Spurs’ starting XI in the near future.
I Giallorossi seem to be eyeing defenders that aren’t the first choice at their clubs in the Premier League. Apart from Tanganga, they have Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof and Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah on their radar.
Tanganga to Roma?
Tanganga has spent the entirety of his professional career at Spurs. His current contract with them expires in the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt), which means Tottenham continue to have a strong say with regard to his future.
Lindelof, meanwhile, is behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the pecking order and perhaps, even captain Harry Maguire, who has been benched by Erik ten Hag in recent games.
Chalobah is also facing a battle to play regularly at Chelsea, especially when he was managed by Thomas Tuchel. Now with Graham Potter in charge, it remains to be seen if he hands the Englishman more starts despite the arrivals of Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana this summer.

Roma have big ambitions. They signed Paulo Dybala as a free agent this summer and are currently 5th in the Serie A table, just one point behind Napoli, Atalanta, and AC Milan after amassing 13 points from six league games so far.
