Bruno Fernandes opens up about his failed Tottenham Hotspur transfer

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has opened up about his failed transfer to Tottenham Hotspur three years back.

Spurs were interested in the now United star in the summer of 2019. They even approached the player, but no move could materialise. In the January that followed, United signed the 28-year-old for nearly £60 million.

Now, the Portuguese midfielder has opened up about that failed transfer. Speaking to The Athletic (subscription required) [h/t football.london], the midfielder revealed that he was angry.

Obviously I wanted to go to the Premier League. The manager, Mauricio Pochettino, was the one who wanted me there. It was a good offer but Sporting tried their best to keep me.

The president (Frederico Varandas) spoke with me but he spoke with me on the wrong day. It was the day after they decided to refuse the offer from Tottenham and I was really angry.

Fernandes broke into the scene when he moved to Sporting Lisbon in 2017. The 28-year-old midfielder gained the interest of top Premier League clubs during his three-year spell at the Portuguese club.

The midfielder scored 63 goals in 137 appearances for Sporting in all competitions. It is not surprising that the north London club were interested in the Portugal international.

He would have made a fine addition to Spurs. With Harry Kane and Heung-min Son ahead of him, the midfielder could have easily notched up his assist numbers, even more than what he has today at Man United.

But that was not to be. Some fans would say that it is for the better. Tottenham have assembled a very good squad this season and it could be argued that the 28-year-old would have trouble starting in the present squad.

Nevertheless, it was three years ago. Maybe things would have been better for us, maybe not. The present is what matters and it is better that Fernandes is not a Tottenham player.
