Argentina set to make Cristian Romero World Cup request that Tottenham Hotspur will not like
Argentina’s squad for the FIFA World Cup 2022 hasn’t been announced yet but it is expected that Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero will make the cut.
The 23-year-old centre-back is crucial for manager Lionel Scaloni, which is why the manager was evidently displeased at Romero’s visa situation this month.
The former Juventus and Atalanta defender had a delay in getting his visa and was stuck in Argentina before finally getting to link up with his teammates in Argentina. He missed the 3-0 friendly win for his nation against Honduras in Miami.
Speaking before Romero’s visa drama was brought to a close, Scaloni said before the game against Honduras (h/t Express) [As covered by TTLAB]:
“Romero’s situation bothers me. He’s stuck in Argentina and can’t travel – it’s a problem. It’s the last date to get together and he can’t be there yet.”
He is now in line to face Jamaica in New Jersey when Argentina take on the Caribbean country later this week. Now, in a piece of news that may upset Spurs boss Antonio Conte, Argentina are set to ask clubs not to play those Argentine players going to Qatar in the final gameweek before the break.
This is according to Doble Amarilla via The Spurs Express on Twitter (h/t Express). If Romero is selected, which he is very likely to, then that could mean Spurs would be asked not to play him against Leeds United on November 12 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League.
The say, logically, would be in the club’s hands with regards to what they want to do. The major burden would be on teams such as Paris Saint-Germain (Lionel Messi) and Inter Milan (Lautaro Martinez), but it goes without saying that Romero is also a vital component in Scaloni’s defence.
The guilt this would bring to clubs in case these players get injured would be immense, considering the AFA can then, explicitly or inexplicitly, imply that ‘they told them so’.

Nevertheless, this is a problem to worry about several weeks down the line. Hopefully, Conte uses Romero well and ensures that his minutes are managed well before arguably the biggest tournament of his life.
