Tottenham Hotspur to battle Manchester United and Manchester City for Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni
According to the Italian outlet Gazetta dello Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Tottenham Hotspur would face stiff competition from rivals Manchester United and Manchester City for Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni.
Spurs were heavily linked with the Italian defender for the majority of the summer transfer window with Antonio Conte keen on adding a high-quality left-footed centre-back to the squad.
Bastoni was identified as a primary target along with RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol however a move for either of the duo did not materialise. Instead, Spurs signed French International Clement Lenglet from FC Barcelona on a season-long loan deal.
Lenglet on a loan deal provides Spurs with the perfect scenario to move again for Bastoni considering his contract expires in 2024 providing Spurs with the perfect opportunity to strike a deal with Inter Milan, who would not be keen to lose him on a free.
The Italian defender rose to prominence as a key player in Antonio Conte’s Scudetto winning run with Inter Milan in the 2020/21 season.
He was also part of Italy’s Euro 2020 Championship winning squad and won the Coppa Italia in the 2021/22 campaign. Conte was the one to thrust him into the senior squad and is very well aware of the talent and ability that Bastoni possesses.
However, he would face stiff competition for the skilful defender who is known for his passing ability and ball control and there would not be a shortage of suitors for the Italian come next summer with his contract running down.
With the manner in which Fabio Paratici and co have functioned since taking over, it would be wise to put some trust in the board. Hopefully, we sort out the centre-back situation in the near future.
Conte’s established relationship with Bastoni could perhaps be a factor to consider if it comes to a point where he has to pick between clubs and Spurs are one of them. It remains to be seen if the Lilywhites retain their interest in the Italy international.

Lenglet’s arrival on loan from Barcelona this summer showed that Spurs are thinking about addressing the question of depth in that position. A young defender like Bastoni could be just that – at least that’s what our fans would hope.
