Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane breaks Thierry Henry’s London derby record after Arsenal goal
Harry Kane broke two goal-scoring records when he scored a penalty for Tottenham Hotspur against Arsenal on Saturday in our 3-1 loss at the Emirates.
That was his 44th goal in a London derby, which overtakes Thierry Henry’s total of 43 – a record he set when he was with the Gunners (h/t Eurosport). The Lilywhites were awarded a penalty around the half-hour mark after a foul on Richarlison by Gabriel Magalhaes.
Kane stepped up to the spot and scored another fantastic penalty, this time past Arsenal and England international goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Spurs went on to lose the game 3-1, but the 29-year-old striker set another goal-scoring record during the game.
He became the first player to score 100 Premier League away goals. His record is well clear of second-placed Wayne Rooney (94), and third-placed Alan Shearer, who scored just 87 of his 260 PL games in away games.
The next active goal-scorer closest to Kane on the list is 35-year-old Jamie Vardy, who has netted 64 times on away grounds. Kane’s first goal for the club against a London-based team came against Fulham in a Premier League game in April 2014.
Spurs went on to win that game 3-1. Since then, Kane has scored 43 more times against London-based teams, with 14 of them coming against their biggest north London rivals.
These records, however, wouldn’t be mattering to Kane at the moment given Spurs’ demoralising defeat against the Gunners. We weren’t half bad before Emerson Royal’s sending off around the hour-mark.
