Garth Crooks labels Hugo Lloris as a “liability” for Tottenham Hotspur in games that matter
Sky Sports’ Adam Bate recently shared a tweet (as previously covered by TTLAB) where he mentioned that out of Hugo Lloris’ 21 errors leading to goals in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur, 11 have come against the ‘big six’ opposition.
This can be interpreted in multiple ways. Perhaps Lloris gets nervy in big games, or simply, Spurs soak more pressure and are under the cosh way more frequently when facing proven, quality opposition.
Nevertheless, as Spurs fans would attest, Lloris isn’t immune to mistakes – big ones, sometimes. He spilt Bukayo Saka’s shot in the danger area which led to Arsenal’s decisive second goal in the north London derby at the Emirates on Saturday.
According to former Spurs and Manchester United player Garth Crooks, the 35-year-old is a liability for the Lilywhites in big games. Writing in his BBC Column, the pundit stated:
“Meanwhile, Antonio Conte’s Spurs have to learn to keep calm and hold their nerve in big games if they are to be taken seriously or have any chance of winning trophies this season. “
“Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris makes ordinary saves look unnecessarily spectacular and is a liability in the games that matter.”
That’s a bit of overanalysing there from Crooks in all honesty. We have seen De Gea’s contemporaries, such as David de Gea, Alisson Becker, and even Jan Oblak, make mistakes – at times when it matters a lot with regard to the outcome of the game.
Lloris, at 35, is playing well. He is agile, his reflexes are quick, and he continues to man the backline in a competent manner.
Mistakes happen. The former Olympique Lyonnais man has had a strong start to the season is the reason – a big one, at least – why we have 17 points from eight league games and are in the running for the PL title.
