Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur keeping an eye on Brentford striker Ivan Toney ahead of January window

Tottenham Hotspur are keeping an eye on Brentford striker Ivan Toney ahead of the January transfer window, as per Football Insider.

Toney was sold by Newcastle United to Peterborough and finally joined the Bees a little over two years ago. Since then, he has been a revelation for them.

The English striker has helped them get promoted and stay in the Premier League since then. He scored a then-record 31 goals in the Championship season that saw Brentford promoted – a record that has since been broken by Fulham’s Aleksandr Mitrovic.

The logic behind Tottenham’s interest is odd considering we just signed Richarlison from Everton in a big-money deal just this summer. Moreover, it would be a surprise if Toney settles for a bench role.

Toney to Spurs?

At 26, he is in the peak years of his career. He was also called up to the England national squad for the first time last month and would be eager to replicate that in the coming years.

That can’t be possible if he is warming the bench at Spurs behind Harry Kane, Richarlison, and Son Heung-min. Conte, with Romelu Lukaku, has shown that he can make it work up front with a dominant, physical striker.

It is also a possibility that Toney is paired with Kane. But for any of this to happen, Brentford should be open to selling their star striker in the first place.

More Tottenham News:

He has arguably been their best player this season, scoring six times and providing three assists in 10 games across competitions. His contract expires in the summer of 2025, which means that the London-based club still have considerable control over his future.
