Hugo Lloris explains why is frustrated despite Tottenham Hotspur beating Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League
Hugo Lloris captained the Spurs team that beat Eintracht Frankfurt at home on Wednesday in front of a packed Tottenham Hotspur Stadium crowd.
The Lilywhites won 3-2 against the current UEFA Europa League champions to go top of their group with seven points from four games. This is a good result on any day of the week.
However, Lloris seems to demand more from his teammates. Tottenham fell behind via a Daichi Kamada goal in the 14th minute but fought their way back to lead 3-1 at half-time.
Frankfurt defender Tuta received a red card in the 59th minute, which is perhaps where Spurs let their guards down. Lloris wants his team to control such situations better.
Speaking in an interview after the win in north London, the former Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper said (h/t Football.London):
“Then in the second half. when you start to miss chances, and they got the red card, maybe we thought the game was over. But at this level in the Champions League, especially when you’re used to playing in the Premier League, there is no easy game.”
Spurs weren’t really in control of the game. An 87th-minute goal from Frankfurt via a set-piece really made things nervy. Harry Kane then missed a penalty later on, which made manager Antonio Conte nervous about a potential ‘disaster’.
However, the club hung on. Lloris, however, says that such a lack of control, especially in the last “25 minutes” of the game, is frustrating.
“We work so hard every day that you can understand that we can be frustrated after a game like this one, because we should have managed the game better.”
Such a mentality is brilliant to see. Top teams aren’t totally content after winning most games as they dissect the performance and try to get better.

It is even more important that Lloris, the captain, has this viewpoint. He would surely make it a point to let his teammates know where they can improve after yesterday – if they haven’t already had an earful from Conte already, that is.
