Tottenham Hotspur told to copy Manchester United and Chelsea trick and sign Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus
Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has urged Tottenham Hotspur to look at the examples set by Thiago Silva at Chelsea and Raphael Varane at Manchester United and make a move for Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci.
According to Giulio Mola (h/t Express), Tottenham are keeping tabs on the player and he could potentially reunite with manager Antonio Conte in the January transfer window. The two worked together during Conte’s time as Juve manager between 2011 and 2014.
Now, Whelan has exclusively told Football Insider that age shouldn’t stop Spurs from signing the vastly experienced Italy international. He said:
“Look at Thiago Silva, look at Varane now. You can never have too much experience. He looks like someone who keeps himself in good nick. You can never have too much experience.”
“He looks like someone who keeps himself in good nick. He’s fit, professional. Players like that bring a new dimension to a football club.”
Whelan said that he could have a similar effect as Silva did when he signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2020. The former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star helped the Blues win the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup not long after joining them.
“He’s a serial winner with a really competitive nature. He won’t be coming to Tottenham, if he does, to just see out the rest of his career. He’ll be helping a team be successful.”
“He could bring a lot with his mentality, he can definitely be like Thiago Silva.”
Even better, Bonucci is currently three years younger than the 38-year-old Silva. The comparison with Varane is rather unfair when it comes to age as he is still in his prime physical years – 29.
Nevertheless, this is a move we would be wise to make. Whelan makes some very good points. Bonucci could very well be a game-changing addition to our team even if it is for a few seasons.

It remains to be seen if the Old Lady are willing to part ways with him. He still has just a little over one and a half years left on his current contract at the Allianz Stadium (Transfermarkt).
