Tottenham questioned for pursuing Leicester City’s James Maddison by Spurs icon Paul Robinson

According to Football.London earlier this month, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have shown interest in Leicester City’s James Maddison with a view of signing the player.

Speaking about Spurs’ alleged interest in the player, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson has expressed his concerns over a move exclusively to Football Insider. He said:

“Would he go to Spurs? I cannot see where he fits in. Conte plays with just two midfielders so Maddison would have to play as one of the wide forwards. I am not sure that would be to his strengths.”

Robinson is right. Manager Antonio Conte does play with two central midfielders that have a defensive nous, unlike Maddison.

However, there always exists a possibility that the manager changes his system to accommodate another player – perhaps a 3-4-1-2. Robinson doesn’t see that happening.

“Would Conte adapt his system to fit in a player like Maddison? I cannot see it. I think he is a number 10. As much as I like Maddison, I cannot see him effectively fitting into Conte’s system.”

Spurs sold a number 10 in Dele Alli this January when he was offloaded to Everton. We don’t have a lot of players that fit the profile of a playmaker that plays between the striker and the central midfielders.

Perhaps it is a position we don’t need strengthening in given how less we would have to bank on it. On the contrary, a case can be made that Maddison can inject that creative spark in the team from the middle of the park that our current options lack to some extent.

Playing out wide is a prospect that seems to be harmful to Maddison’s playing time considering the competition he would have there for Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison, and Lucas Moura.

It remains to be seen if we pursue the former Norwich City star in the first place – and only then will it make more sense to think about how and where he potentially fits into our team.
