Alan Hutton backs Tottenham Hotspur to win the race for James Maddison
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Tottenham Hotspur defender Alan Hutton has backed his ex-club to win the race for Leicester City star James Maddison.
The 25-year-old spent years in the English lower leagues and in the Scottish Premier League before moving to the Foxes in 2018. Maddison has since thrived at the King Power and is today one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
An attacking midfielder, Maddison is a tour de force on his day in the attack. He has so far made 181 appearances for the Foxes, scoring 50 goals and assisting 34 more. Add to it his versatility and Spurs could land themselves a very good player capable of fulfilling several roles.
With Leicester struggling, Maddison has been linked with a move away from the King Power in the upcoming transfer windows. Among his suitors are the newly flush Newcastle United and Tottenham.
Speaking on the matter, Hutton believes that the Magpies can offer the 25-year-old better financial terms. He, however, has urged the player to move to the N-17 for footballing reasons. Given that the English international is seeking UEFA Champions League football, Tottenham does have an edge over Eddie Howe and co.
“If it comes down to just football reasons, I think someone like Maddison would fit into the Spurs way. He works hard, he has got that creative spark.”
Hutton goes on to add that Maddison’s potential arrival will give the Tottenham attack a new dimension. While we have improved under Antonio Conte, the lack of a reliable number 10 has seen us struggle to pry open opposition defences.
“That is possibly something Tottenham miss in games from that number ten role. He could fit in to the Conte way and it could be something that Maddison could really flourish under.”
A dynamic goal-getter, Maddison will provide Spurs with another outlet for goals. Add to it his vision and eye for a pass and it is clear why he is so highly rated. Landing him will certainly add a new dimension to the Spurs’ attack.

Tottenham have made some smart transfer moves in recent years but still need some further reinforcements. The focus should be to supplement the attack and adding Maddison to the roster will achieve just that.
